Non-equilibrium diffuse-interface two-pressure model for surface tension

We discuss a non-equilibrium diffuse-interface two-pressure model for surface tension. The model is based on the idea of introducing a new vector field with a meaning close to the gradient of the volume fraction. In contrast to conventional diffuse interface models for surface tension, we do not assume the phase pressure equilibrium. We discuss a variational formulation for such a model and show that the model can be used to describe resolved macroscopic interfaces or non-resolved interfaces (e.g. with a dispersed phase).
